GoodGame Shadow Kings is a web based and mobile app game from GoodGame studios. Shadow Kings is a real time strategy MMO. While playing through the first few missions, that work as a tutorial, one might first be reminded of Age of Empires. The user is tasked with expanding the city, building barracks for troops, building farms to feed the people, constructing a stone quarry, and attacking some nearby Orcs who attacked you to start the game off.
Most of your typical resource management items are here. You need stones and wood to build the building. You need gold coins of course to purchase supplies and certain items. Diamonds can be used to speed up the building of certain items or more quickly complete tasks. Even though Shadow Kings is free to play, this is where a lot of the in app purchases come from. Diamonds are very useful and can quickly speed up the game and help in your advancement, but diamonds are very rare. One of quickest way to speed up your game development is to purchase some diamonds.
Managing your city consists of keeping the people fed through your farms, keeping them happy with various city upgrades, and keeping them safe. You keep them safe by recruiting soldiers, building defenses for your walls, and being sure to place the defenses on the walls. Each time you expand your city you receive another tower where city defenders can be placed.
Shadow Kings is a little more linear than some RTS games in that you have a quest log that helps guide you along. Once you reach level 7 though you can begin interacting with other players through battles, espionage, and trading. Once you reach this stage of the game (which you can get to rather quickly) the game really opens up and becomes a little more interesting. You as a player can earn honor points for your interactions with other players. One of the most important things to do early on is join an alliance. This helps you financially and in military defense situations, and without an alliance you will have to go at it alone.
The graphics for Shadow Kings are a little simple and cartoony, but as your city grows it really comes alive with people and warriors moving around. The battles are pretty disappointing though, as they just come back with reports with no graphical animation of what happens. For a mostly free online web based game though, the graphics get the job done.
GoodGame Shadow Kings is pretty fun game. When you first look at the game it might be a bit simple, but as you dig in deeper and deeper, there really is a lot to the game. In fact, at the beginning, it may seem a little too much. It seems the developers tried to include everything, and in the beginning it can be a bit overwhelming keeping up with everything. Once you get your feet wet though, it can be a fun RTS to dig deeper into.
